But a few more days of the hazards of what was going on made me decide that it was time to disband Blue Whale I didn't sign any contracts or anything else with Zappa-just moved out of England. So you were always opposed to that stuff? So Don Ellis called me and said Herbie wanted me to fly out and meet Neal. And the tickets have already been sold. So I have a lawsuit against them. And eventually I had to say, Look, dont book any more shows after October. Fine. AD: I picked up a feel for it by watching drummers, looking in books and practicing it. I been uplifted when he called, but when heard "country/western" I went back down. l went down there and found it to be great. Eric wasnt up to it. Journey made three records for Columbia with that line up. Which in those days was not good. NoI didnt think Journey was done. I didnt need anything else, as far as an opinion on the show. I got a panic in me. Paul comes in with the basic song. I want out. I'd most likely end up breaking the pickups if I played them, because I don't like to play lightly. They'll tell me, "I think you should simplify it." I guess I was just in denial about it, like, You gotta be kidding me. [Journey had] just reworked our partnership. I stayed with them for about six months, just to help them out because there wasn't really any band around that I could join that could take over from Zappa. And the reason I didnt realize that I was an alcoholic is that I didnt have to wake up in the morning and pound down a six-pack. So I thought about It, you know, and I went back home.
